Etsy refunds: which fees you get back and which you don’t

Refunding an Etsy order doesn’t put you back where you started. Some fees come back automatically, one only comes back if you cancel too, and money you spent on postage is gone. Here is what Etsy’s help pages say.

What Etsy gives back

When you refund through Shop Manager, Etsy automatically refunds the transaction fee and the payment processing fee for the refunded transactions (source). Etsy credits processing fees in proportion to the refund (source). The listing fee is only credited if you also cancel the transaction (source).

Etsy’s refund pages don’t say how Offsite Ads, regulatory operating or currency conversion fees are handled on a refund, so check the credit lines in your Payment account or monthly statement for those.

Refund vs. cancel

Canceling is a separate step. Canceling an order gives the buyer a full refund, credits your listing and transaction fees, and removes the order from your sales count, and Etsy doesn’t charge you for canceling (source). If you bought a label, refund it first: USPS labels can be refunded within 30 days if unused (source).

Where the money comes from

The refund is taken from your Payment account, and if there isn’t enough there, from the card on file (source). That can push your balance negative and pause deposits until new sales cover it (source).

Worked example: a $30 order

A $30 item with $6 shipping and $2.40 sales tax, sold by a US shop. The buyer paid $38.40.

FeeChargedFull refund onlyFull refund + cancel
Listing fee$0.20kept by Etsycredited
Transaction fee (6.5% of $36)$2.34creditedcredited
Processing (3% of $38.40 + $0.25)$1.40credited in proportioncredited in proportion

So even when every Etsy fee comes back, a refund after shipping still costs you the label and the item itself. Your statement shows the exact credits.

Timing rules

Etsy Payments refunds can be issued for up to 180 days after the sale. If you refund the buyer outside Etsy after that, Etsy can’t refund your fees. You can’t refund an order through Etsy once the buyer has filed a chargeback (source).

How TikTok Shop compares

On TikTok Shop, a refund returns the referral fee minus a refund administration fee of 20% of that fee, capped at $5 per SKU (source). See TikTok Shop fees explained.

Common questions

Does Etsy refund the transaction fee when I refund an order?

Yes. Refunding through Shop Manager automatically refunds the transaction and payment processing fees for the refunded transactions.

Does Etsy refund the listing fee?

Only if you also cancel the transaction. A refund on its own doesn’t credit the $0.20 listing fee.

Who pays for an Etsy refund?

The seller. Etsy takes the refund from your Payment account balance, or charges your card on file if the balance isn’t enough.

Can I refund an Etsy order after 180 days?

Not through Etsy Payments. If you refund outside Etsy after that, Etsy can’t refund your fees.
