Etsy Offsite Ads fee explained

The Offsite Ads fee is often the single biggest surprise on an Etsy statement: one row that takes 12% or 15% of an order. Here is exactly when Etsy charges it, how much, and whether you can turn it off, based on Etsy’s own help and policy pages.

What Offsite Ads are

Etsy buys ads for sellers’ listings on other sites, such as search engines and social networks. You don’t pay anything up front or per click. You only pay when one of those ads leads to an order. Source: Etsy Help: How Etsy’s Offsite Ads Work.

When an order is “attributed” to an ad

An order is attributed to Offsite Ads when a buyer clicks one of these ads and then buys from your shop within 30 days. One click can lead to several attributed orders if the buyer makes separate purchases in that window. If the buyer’s last click before buying was an on-site Etsy Ad, only the Etsy Ads charge applies, not the Offsite Ads fee. Source: Etsy Help: How Etsy’s Offsite Ads Work.

15% or 12%: the $10,000 threshold

The rate depends on your shop’s sales in any consecutive 365-day period. If your shop has always stayed under $10,000 USD, the fee is 15% and you may opt out. Once your shop reaches $10,000 USD in any 365-day period, the fee drops to 12%, but participation becomes required for the lifetime of the shop, even if sales later fall. For the threshold, Etsy counts item price times quantity, minus discounts and cancellations, and excludes shipping, taxes and gift wrap. What the fee is charged on

The percentage applies to the order total: the listing price you display (including any personalization charge) plus the shipping and gift wrap you charge. For US sellers, sales tax is not included. For sellers outside the US, taxes that are included in your listing prices are included. Source: Etsy Fees & Payments Policy.

The $100 cap

The Offsite Ads fee on a single order never exceeds $100 USD, whatever the order total. So on a $1,000 order at 15%, you would pay $100 rather than $150. Source: Etsy Help: How Etsy’s Offsite Ads Work.

A worked example

A US shop under the $10,000 threshold sells a $40.00 item with $8.00 shipping to a buyer who clicked an Offsite Ad last week. Etsy also collects $3.84 sales tax. The Offsite Ads fee is 15% × $48.00 = $7.20. The usual fees still apply on top: transaction fee 6.5% × $48.00 = $3.12, processing fee 3% × $51.84 + $0.25 = $1.81, and the $0.20 listing fee. Total fees: $12.33, or about 25.7% of the $48.00 sale, compared with $5.13 (about 10.7%) for the same order without the ad. How to opt out (if your shop is eligible)

  1. On Etsy.com, open Shop Manager.
  2. Select Settings, then Offsite Ads.
  3. Choose Opt out of Offsite Ads and confirm.

This option only exists while your shop has never reached $10,000 USD in a 365-day period. Whether opting out makes sense depends on how many sales the ads bring you, so it helps to see how many attributed orders and how much in Offsite Ads fees you actually paid. Common questions

How much is the Etsy Offsite Ads fee?

15% of the attributed order total if your shop has always made under $10,000 USD in any 365-day period, or 12% once it has reached $10,000. Either way, the fee on one order never exceeds $100 USD.

Can I turn off Etsy Offsite Ads?

Only if your shop has never made $10,000 USD or more in any consecutive 365-day period. In that case you can opt out in Shop Manager under Settings, Offsite Ads. Shops that have reached the threshold must participate.

Does the Offsite Ads fee include shipping?

Yes. Etsy charges it on the order total, which includes the shipping and gift wrap you charge. For US sellers, sales tax is not included.
