Etsy shipping labels: what they cost you and how they hit your profit

Buying labels on Etsy is convenient, but the label is only part of the cost of shipping. Etsy also takes fees on the shipping you charge, carriers can adjust labels later, and unused labels have to be refunded on time. Here is the full math.

How labels are charged

Label costs come out of your Payment account, each label as its own entry (source). Because a label isn’t a fee tied to the sale, it is taken from your Current balance when you buy it, even if the sale’s own earnings are still pending (source). Etsy’s order earnings view includes labels bought on Etsy, but not postage you buy elsewhere (source). Etsy says labels are available to sellers in the US, Canada and the UK, and that buying them on Etsy counts positively toward the Star Seller shipping score (source).

What sets the label price

Price depends on the origin, destination, weight and package dimensions, and Etsy’s USPS labels can include discounted rates with no membership fee (source). A few rules that change the number:

Etsy takes fees on the shipping you charge

The 6.5% transaction fee applies to shipping as well as the item, and the 3% processing fee applies to the whole order total (source, source). So the shipping you charge isn’t all yours to spend on postage.

US order, shipping onlyAmount
Shipping you charge$6.00
Transaction fee (6.5%)−$0.39
Processing fee (3%)−$0.18
Label you buy−$5.50
Left from shipping−$0.07

To break even on shipping, divide the label cost by 0.905 (that is, 1 minus 6.5% minus 3%): $5.50 ÷ 0.905 = $6.08. If an Offsite Ad drove the order, another 15% applies to shipping too, so you’d need $5.50 ÷ 0.755 = $7.28. Offering “free” shipping doesn’t avoid the fees; the cost moves into the item price, which carries the same percentages.

Label adjustments after you ship

If the carrier finds the weight, dimensions, ZIP code or package type differ from the label, the difference is charged to (or credited to) your Payment account and Etsy emails you about it (source). Weigh and measure the packed box, not the item, to avoid surprise charges a few weeks later.

Refund labels you didn’t use

Unused labels can be refunded, but only within a window: 30 days for USPS and 15 days for UPS and FedEx, and the refund itself can take 15 to 30 days to arrive (source). Refund the label before you cancel an order. A label that was used isn’t refunded when you refund the buyer.

Common questions

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping you charge, and the 3% + $0.25 processing fee applies to the whole order including shipping (US rates).

How much should I charge for shipping on Etsy to break even?

Divide your label and packaging cost by 0.905 for US orders without ads. A $5.50 label needs about $6.08 of shipping. Add more margin if Offsite Ads may apply.

Can I get a refund for an Etsy shipping label?

Unused USPS labels can be refunded within 30 days and UPS or FedEx labels within 15 days. Refunds can take 15 to 30 days to appear.

Why was I charged a shipping adjustment on Etsy?

The carrier found the package’s weight, size, ZIP code or type didn’t match the label. The difference is charged to your Payment account.
