Etsy reserve: why Etsy is holding your money
If part of your Etsy sales is stuck in your pending balance with a note about a reserve, you are not alone, and it is usually temporary. Here is what a Payment account reserve is, why it happens, and what actually gets the money released, based on Etsy’s help pages.
What a Payment account reserve is
With a reserve, Etsy holds a percentage of the funds from each new sale of a physical item, so that money is not available for deposit within the usual processing time. Etsy shows the reserve percentage and holding time in your Payment account; both can vary by account. Sales of digital items are not held in reserve. Why Etsy places a reserve
Etsy says reserves protect buyers and sellers and help keep your balance from going negative after chargebacks or refunds. Factors it lists include your first sale on Etsy, a sudden sharp increase in orders or refunds, orders consistently missing tracking, orders not shipped on time, and notices of alleged intellectual property infringement. Etsy Support cannot tell you the specific reason, and support agents cannot remove a reserve. Source: Etsy Help: What is a Payment Account Reserve?.
How to get reserved funds released sooner
Add valid tracking to each order. If Etsy can confirm the tracking shows the order is in transit, the reserved funds for that order are moved to your current balance right away. Without confirmed tracking, the money is released after the default holding period shown in your account. Funds become available at 6 pm ET on the day they are released. Sellers in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK can buy Etsy shipping labels that may include tracking. Source: Etsy Help: What is a Payment Account Reserve?.
How long reserves last
Etsy regularly reviews accounts with a reserve and may adjust or remove it. For most sellers, Etsy says the reserve is removed within 90 days, though it can be extended if there are fulfillment or policy concerns. Star Sellers do not get a reserve placed on their shop. What still comes out while you have a reserve
Refunds, fees, Etsy shipping labels and Etsy Ads keep coming out of your current balance. If that balance goes negative, reserved funds are applied as they are released, and your card on file is only charged if your current and pending balances together still aren’t enough. Reserve vs. new-seller waiting period
A reserve is different from the standard processing time. Newer sellers may also wait up to 14 days after a sale before funds can be deposited, even without a reserve. See how Etsy deposits work and Etsy Help: Why Hasn’t My Money Been Deposited Yet?.
How to avoid a reserve in future
- Ship within your stated processing times, and lengthen them if you need to.
- Don’t mark items shipped before handing them to the carrier.
- Answer buyer messages quickly, ideally within 24 hours.
- Keep up with seller policies and keep customer service strong.

See which sales are in reserve
Orders with held funds show an “Order in reserve” badge. In your monthly statement CSV, the Status column shows whether a sale is in reserve and the Availability Date column estimates when it becomes available. PayoutPeek reads that CSV in your browser and shows what made up each deposit, so you can see how much is still pending. Source: Etsy Help: What is a Payment Account Reserve?.
