TikTok Shop affiliate commission: what creators really cost you
Creator commission is often the biggest single cost on a TikTok Shop order, bigger than the referral fee. Here is how TikTok calculates it, when it is paid, and how to work out the highest rate you can afford.
Try the calculator: our free TikTok Shop fee & profit calculator has a creator commission box, so you can try different rates on your own price.
How the commission is calculated
When a creator’s video, LIVE or showcase drives a sale, you pay the commission rate you set for that product. In your settlement report it is (Product price excluding tax − Seller discount) × commission rate, so it is charged on the item, not on shipping or tax (source). TikTok’s affiliate page describes the same thing from the creator’s side: (Revenue − Refunds) × commission rate (source).
It can show up on three lines: Affiliate commission, Affiliate partner commission and Affiliate shop ads commission (source).
When it’s paid, and what happens on a refund
For orders created after April 15, 2025, creators are paid about 15 days after delivery, or later if your own settlement period is longer. If the order is refunded before the creator is paid, the commission comes back to you. If the refund happens after that, it doesn’t (source). On top of that, TikTok keeps a refund administration fee of 20% of the referral fee on refunded items, capped at $5 per SKU (source).
Changing your rate
Raising a rate takes effect right away. Lowering one doesn’t: creators who are already promoting the product keep the old rate for 30 days, and a change to a target collaboration takes effect 5 days after you edit it (source). If you use tiered commission, TikTok withholds commission at the higher tier while an order is in progress and refunds the difference at settlement if the threshold wasn’t reached (source).
Worked example: one order with and without a creator
A $25 item with $5 shipping paid by the buyer, no discounts. It costs you $7 to make and $4.50 to ship. TikTok’s referral fee is 6% in most US categories and includes buyer-paid shipping in its base.
| Direct sale | Creator sale at 20% | |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays (item + shipping) | $30.00 | $30.00 |
| Referral fee (6% × $30) | −$1.80 | −$1.80 |
| Creator commission (20% × $25) | — | −$5.00 |
| Materials | −$7.00 | −$7.00 |
| Shipping label | −$4.50 | −$4.50 |
| Profit | $16.70 | $11.70 |
The 20% creator rate costs almost three times the referral fee. At 10% the creator order would leave $14.20; at 30% it would leave $9.20. Referral fee sources: source, source.
The highest commission you can afford
Commission is charged on the item price, so the rate that wipes out your profit is profit on a direct sale ÷ item price. In the example: $16.70 ÷ $25 = 66.8%. To keep at least $8 per order you can go up to ($16.70 − $8) ÷ $25 = 34.8%. Do this sum before you join an open collaboration, and redo it whenever your materials or postage change.
Compared with Etsy Offsite Ads
Etsy’s closest equivalent is Offsite Ads: 15% (or 12% for shops over $10,000 a year), charged on the order total including shipping, capped at $100 per order, and only when an ad drove the sale. The big difference is that on TikTok you choose the rate; on Etsy the rate is fixed. See Etsy Offsite Ads fee explained.

Common questions
How is TikTok Shop affiliate commission calculated?
In the settlement report it is the product price excluding tax, minus any seller discount, times the commission rate you set. Shipping and tax aren’t included.
Do I get the commission back if the order is refunded?
If the refund happens before the creator is paid (about 15 days after delivery for orders after April 15, 2025), the commission comes back to you. After that it doesn’t.
Can I lower my TikTok Shop commission rate?
Yes, but creators already promoting the product keep the old rate for 30 days. Increases apply immediately.
What commission rate should I offer?
There is no single right rate. Work out your profit on a direct sale, divide by the item price to get the rate that leaves you nothing, and pick a rate well below it.
