TikTok Shop vs Etsy for handmade sellers
Both platforms work for handmade goods, but they charge differently, pay at different speeds and have very different rules for things you make after the order comes in. Here is the comparison, using each platform’s own published US rules.

What each platform lets you sell
Etsy requires everything listed to be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by you. Items in the made-by-you group can be made by hand or with tools like a 3D printer, CNC or Cricut, reselling isn’t allowed as handmade, production partners have to be disclosed, and items made with AI tools have to say so (source).
TikTok Shop has no handmade category of its own; handmade items use the normal category table (source). What matters more is timing. Standard orders have to be dispatched within 2 business days. Made-to-Order lets eligible shops set a handling time of 3 to 14 business days, but it needs a Shop Performance Score of at least 3.5, an Account Health Rating above 150, no restrictions and no IP violations; the listing has to be new and labeled “[Made-to-Order]” in the title and description; and it is meant for a standard production method or limited variations (source, source). TikTok’s Custom Order Requirements describe made-to-order products as ones that are not buyer-customized and can be resold if returned (source).
In practice: one-off personalized pieces fit Etsy’s rules more easily. Repeatable designs you can ship in 2 days, or that qualify for Made-to-Order once your scores are high enough, fit TikTok Shop.

A $40 item with $6 shipping, a US seller and buyer, and $3.68 sales tax. Etsy’s processing fee includes the tax; TikTok’s referral fee excludes it.

On TikTok, a refunded item costs a refund administration fee of 20% of its referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU (source).
How fast you get paid
Etsy counts from the sale. New sellers generally have funds available 14 days after a sale, and established shops can have them the next business day, then deposits follow your deposit schedule (source). Etsy can also apply a reserve to some accounts.
TikTok Shop counts from delivery. New shops are in the Introductory tier at 31 days after delivery, the Standard tier is 8 days, and better scores get 5 or 1 day; a reserve can hold part of each order for 30 days from delivery (source). How buyers find you
Etsy buyers mostly arrive by searching Etsy, plus Etsy’s own ads and Offsite Ads. TikTok Shop sales mostly come from videos, LIVEs and creators. That changes the work: on Etsy it’s listings, photos and search terms; on TikTok it’s regular video and sending samples to creators, and the commission you offer is part of your price.
Running both
Plenty of handmade sellers keep Etsy for personalized and one-off work and use TikTok Shop for best-selling repeatable designs. If you do both, compare your real numbers month by month rather than guessing: each platform’s fees land in a different report.

Common questions
Is TikTok Shop cheaper than Etsy for handmade sellers?
On a plain order, TikTok Shop’s 6% referral fee is usually lower than Etsy’s listing, transaction and processing fees combined. Creator commissions on TikTok and Offsite Ads on Etsy can change that, so compare with your own numbers.
Can I sell made-to-order items on TikTok Shop?
Yes, if your shop qualifies: TikTok’s Made-to-Order feature needs a Shop Performance Score of 3.5 or more and an Account Health Rating above 150, among other rules, and allows 3 to 14 business days of handling time. Otherwise standard orders must ship within 2 business days.
Which pays faster, Etsy or TikTok Shop?
For new sellers, usually Etsy: Etsy generally makes funds available about 14 days after a sale for new sellers, while new TikTok shops are paid about 31 days after delivery.
